One of the most common things I hear from parents before booking a newborn session is:
"Our home isn't photo-ready."
Or:
"We live in a small condo, so I'm not sure if newborn photos would work."
If you've been thinking the same thing, I have good news for you:
Your home is probably much more suitable for newborn photos than you think.
Most Toronto Families Don't Live in Magazine-Worthy Homes
And honestly?
They don't need to.
Most of the families I photograph live in condos, townhomes, or busy family homes filled with toys, laundry baskets, baby gear, and all the beautiful chaos that comes with welcoming a new baby.
My goal isn't to photograph your house.
My goal is to photograph your family.
The connection between you and your baby is what matters most.
We Only Need One Good Window
Many parents are surprised when I tell them that we only need one area with good natural light.
That's it.
Not an entire house.
Not a perfectly decorated nursery.
Not floor-to-ceiling windows.
Just one good source of natural light.
In most homes, that space is usually:
The primary bedroom
The living room
A corner near a large window
Some of my favourite newborn images have been created in the smallest spaces.
Your Nursery Doesn't Need to Be Finished
Another thing parents often worry about is whether the nursery is ready.
The answer?
It doesn't have to be.
Many babies are still sleeping in their parents' room during those first few weeks.
Some families haven't finished decorating the nursery yet.
Others are still waiting for furniture to arrive.
None of that affects your newborn session.
Your baby won't remember whether the nursery was complete.
What you'll remember are the tiny fingers, sleepy stretches, and the feeling of holding your newborn in those early days.
Real Life Is Welcome Here
Newborn life is messy.
There may be bottles on the counter.
A basket of laundry waiting to be folded.
A toddler's toys scattered around the living room.
That's normal.
Before we start, I may suggest moving a few distracting items out of the frame, but that's usually all that's needed.
No deep cleaning.
No stress cleaning until midnight.
No trying to make your home look like someone else's.
Why Small Spaces Can Feel More Intimate
Some of the most emotional images happen in smaller homes.
When everyone is gathered together on a bed or cuddled on a couch, the images naturally feel cozy, connected, and intimate.
The focus stays exactly where it belongs:
On your family.
Not on the size of your home.
The Moments Matter More Than the Space
Years from now, your child won't care whether your home was large or small.
They won't notice whether the nursery was finished.
They won't see the pile of laundry that was hidden just outside the frame.
What they'll see is how tiny they were.
How much they were loved.
And the way their parents looked at them during those first few weeks together.
Those are the memories worth preserving.
